On the 29th of August 2016, the Executive Mayor of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM), Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, handed over a new set of karate regalia worth R36 000 to a community based karate club in Graaff – Reinet.
The much anticipated community event took place at the Camdeboo Recreational Center, based in the Masizakhe location. Amongst those that attended the event was the newly elected Mayor of Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, Cllr Deon de Vos, accompanied by his newly elected Speaker, Cllr Thembisa Nonnies. As she rose to deliver her key note address, the SBDM Executive Mayor was honoured in style by an energetic choir from a nearby primary school.
In her key note address the Executive Mayor urged the karate club to expand their operations, after the amalgamation, in order to include the new municipal areas, previously known as Ikwezi and Baviaans. “The Sarah Baartman District Municipality encourages a united front within our local communities through sporting codes that could potentially see one of our own participating in the Olympics one day.” she added.
The event was concluded by 4 judo performances from karate scholars who showcased their skills in the presence of distinguished guests and community members. The karate club will soon be participating in one of the biggest karate events in the country and greatly appreciated the support they’ve received from the District Municipality.
