The Executive Mayor of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Cllr Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, recently hosted a delegation of 20 from the city of Jincheng, China. The visit is in line with a recently signed Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) between the city of Jincheng and the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, following a twin city agreement entered into in 2010. One of the key areas agreed to in the MOU was an academic student exchange programme for the mutual benefit of both municipalities. The delegation was comprised of 15 students, 2 teachers and 3 municipal officials from Jincheng City.

The programme kicked off on Thursday the 1st of September with a tour of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), which was followed by an English lecture for international students. In the afternoon, the delegation was treated to a game drive in the Addo Elephant National Park to explore nature conservation opportunities within the Sarah Baartman District. The delegation was accompanied by the newly elected Speaker of Council, Nonkqubela Pieters and Portfolio Councillors, Khululwa Ncamiso, Solethu Lucas, Vernon Stuurman, Noel O’Connel and three municipal officials.

The delegation visited two high schools in the Kouga Local Municipality, namely Nico Malan High School and Humansdorp Secondary School. The visits to these schools led to a lively interaction amongst the students who exchanged songs and danced endlessly, while learning more about each other’s cultures. In her final address to the students, the Executive Mayor encouraged the learners from Jincheng City and said,” I trust that you will not hesitate to return to the Sarah Baartman District. Your skills and expertise will be highly appreciated in helping us move forward. In the near future, we would like to send a delegation of South African students to your city with the same mission and I trust that you will assist them to make the most of the opportunity because the youth is our country’s future” she concluded.

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality intends to send a cultural group from the District to perform at the Chinese New Year Festival in Jincheng City, which will take place early in February 2017.
