The Cacadu District Municipality - a world in one region - is not only the largest district municipality in Eastern Cape, it also boasts a treasure trove of natural assets and a rich cultural and agricultural heritage.- Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve - part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and now a World Heritage Site

- the diverse tourism regions of Tsitsikamma Adventure, Kouga, Karoo Heartland, Sunshine Coast, Frontier Country and the Sunday¹s River Valley.
Well mapped and sign-posted tourist routes such as the Tsitsikamma Adventure Route, the Langkloof Fruit Route and Baviaans Route - and sub-routes such as the Blue Crane Route, Mohair Route, Merino Route and Owl Route - are packaging the district more attractively than ever.
Click Here For Map Of Tourist Destinations Cacadu is also home to the world’s first Big Seven reserve ¬ with a proposed marine protected area (inhabited by Southern Right Whales and Great White Sharks) stretching 120 000ha across the Indian Ocean as a southern extension of Greater Addo.World records and firsts in the district include:- the highest commercial bungy jump in the world
- the highest narrow gauge bridge in the world
- South Africa’s first national marine park (the Tsitsikamma National Park)
- the first tree-top canopy tour in South Africa
- more plant biomes than in any other district (six of South Africa¹s seven to be exact).
The history of Eastern Cape¹s 100-year frontier wars and the history of the Xhosa and settlers are also found within Cacadu. Two national heritage sites are:- Egazini, where the bloody Battle of Grahamstown took place in 1819, and
- Khoisan icon Sarah Bartmann¹s grave at Hankey.
Cacadu also hosts the annual National Arts Festival (the largest arts festival in the southern hemisphere) held in the charming little city of Grahamstown.Tourism has shown a twin growth between public sector projects such as the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve (read more about this in the Kouga region), Greater Addo Elephant National Park and upmarket private sector developments such as the Amakhala, Kwantu, Shamwari and Lalibela game reserves. The spin-off has seen the establishment of countless B&Bs, farmstays, lodges, chalets and the refurbishment of hotels.Accessibility is a key drawcard for tourism in Cacadu. Conveniently situated on the tail end of the Garden Route, Cacadu can be accessed by air travel via the airports of Port Elizabeth and George and the smaller airstrips of Graaff-Reinet and Plettenberg Bay. Some of Cacadu District’s many treasures include world-class surfing spots, Tree Top canopy tours, and more plant biomes than any other district – six of South Africa’s seven to be exact. | |
