In the old native languages, the Karoo means "Place of thirst."
What it lacks in water though, it makes up for in the hospitality of
its people, the true spirit of the Karoo. A boundless and mysterious area.
The incredible desert days give way to clear, dark nights bright with
stars offering some of the best stargazing in the world.

KAROO TOWNS IN CACADU

Aberdeen

Aberdeen is located in the Camdeboo plains and frequently attracts many
new comers. The architectural style depicts Victorian, Russian and Gothic
architecture. The town’s main attractions include the Dutch Reformed
church and the Camdeboo Stall situated at the N9 and R61 intersection.

Graaff-Reinet

Established in 1786, Graaff-Reinet is a town with great historic interest
with 220 national monuments, numerous art galleries and museums.
Graaff-Reinet lies on a bend of the Sundays River in the shadow of the
rocky Sneeuberg mountain range. The Valley of Desolation is a key
attraction of the Cambdeboo National Park, which is located just outside
Graaff-Reinet. The Valley of Desolation is a geological phenomenon formed
millions of years ago from extreme weathering and erosion,
which resulted in awe-inspiring rock formations and sheer cliff faces.

Nieu-Bethesda

Established in 1878, Nieu-Bethesda lies 55km North West of Graaff-Reinet.
Nieu-Bethesda is home to the famous Owl House, a mythical kingdom
made up of hundreds of cement and glass sculptures created by artist
Helen Martins, and on which Athol Fugard’s play “The Road to Mecca” was based.
This artistic town is home to growing talent in the sector of arts and crafts.
Places to view include The Bethesda Art Centre, The Old Mill and Freddie
Jacobs Craft Workshops. Alternatively, visitors can go back in time with
Jakob's Guided Donkey Cart Tours. Hiking fanatics will also find the many
routes within the Nieu-Bethesda appealing.

Pearston

Founded in 1957, Pearston can be found between Somerset East and Graaff-Reinet.
An interesting place to visit while in Pearston is the Cranemere Private Museum.

Somerset East

Established in 1825 by Lord Charles Somerset, Somerset East is situated on the
R62 en route from Pearston to Cookhouse. Found at the base of the Boschberg
Mountains, Somerset East is home to many beautiful national monuments and
buildings of historical importance. Activities include abseiling, para-gliding,
Bungee Jumping at the Bloukrans River Bridge, canopy tours, various exciting
hiking trails and the Storms River mouth walks, fishing, mountain biking, 4x4,
rock climbing, hiking, hunting farms, horseback game trails and clay pigeon shooting.
