Demographics - About the Cacadu district
Location
The Cacadu district is the largest district municipality in the Eastern Cape and covers 34% of the entire province’s footprint. Cacadu spans 388 206 ha from Graaff-Reinet in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south and between the Bloukrans River in the west and Great Fish River in the east. The Cacadu District Municipality is the official authority of the area’s nine local municipal areas; namely, Baviaans, Blue Crane, Camdeboo, Ikwezi, Kouga, Kou-Kamma, Makana, Ndlambe and Sundays River Valley.
Population
The Cacadu district’s population is 388 206 (Census 2001), with 6.7 people living per square kilometre. The average population growth of Cacadu is 2% per annum is a significant decrease from 2.6% in 1996.
Level of education
The largest segment (28.8%) of the population has some secondary education. This bodes well for the employability of potential entrants into the labour market. A relatively large proportion of the population (25.2%) only has some primary education. Conversely, 15% of the population has no schooling. This translates into 60,570 individuals who do not have a basic level of literacy.
Employment per formal sector
The largest proportion of the population of the Cacadu district is employed in the Agriculture sector. However, there has been a significant decrease in the proportion of the population that is employed in this sector, over the period 2000 (38.3%) to 2004 (34.4%). Conversely, the community services (health, social work, NGOs) and trade (resale of new & used goods) sectors have experienced an increase in number of individuals employed; 15.3% in 2000 to 17.5% in 2004 and 10.5% in 2000 to 11.4% in 2004, respectively.
